Newark Rotary partners with the Salvation Army

March 3 saw the end to a three-month phase of a successful partnership between the Newark Area Services (NAS) branch of The Salvation Army NJ and the Rotary Club of Newark.  Back in December, Captain Sergo Lalanne, Commanding Officer and Pastor of the Newark Ironbound Church and community center, and also a Newark Rotarian, engaged Newark Rotarians to participate in the Army's Angel Tree program where individual donors, agencies, and companies can make a monetary donation or they can buy holiday gifts children.  Rotarians responded with their time and treasure, donating gifts and gift cards for deserving youngsters. On March 3, Captains Sergo and Edelyne Lalanne hosted a Rotary meeting at their location in the Ironbound section of Newark. At this meeting, the results of a successful coat drive by Newark Rotary came to fruition, as over 80 coats were presented for distribution to those in need. Rotarians received a tour of the facility, which is located at 132 Clifford Street, and information on the center’s emergency food pantry, English as a Second Language classes, Sunday church services, and an outstanding youth music and arts program.  Several divisional leaders took time off from their busy schedules to express their appreciation to Newark Rotary and to say thank you for their continued supports. This was the perfect occasion for Newark Rotary and representatives from The Salvation Army NJ to pose for photos.  These Army leaders included,
Major James Betts: Divisional Commander of Salvation Army NJ
Captain Jonathan Jackson: Newark Area Services (NAS) Coordinator
Nemin Jaya: NAS Director of Administration
Undoubtedly there will continue to be a meaningful relationship between Newark Rotary and The Salvation Army.
Newark Rotary President Arjune Sharma is pleased with the success of the partnership and expressed his commitment to fostering continued relationships with both The Salvation Army and other Newark-based organizations that allow Rotary to practice SERVICE ABOVE SELF.
